The Arctic Monkeys definitely deserves more of my love; I’m of the opinion that I don’t like them enough and why is that? They’re a cool band, they make pretty good music, their videos are always entertaining to watch, and they always come up with the craziest albeit coolest ideas to incorporate into their live performances.
There’s just something about them that I can’t fully embrace and accept whole-heartedly – I’ve yet to find out what it is.
‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ is one of their latest singles, taken off their sophomore album, Favourite Worst Nightmare. Compared to their first single, ‘Brianstorm’, I’m certainly more in favour of their second. For a 21 year old, Alex Turner writes pretty impressive lyrics; I underestimate the guys that are the same age as I am, but reality is there’s a lot of talented 21 year olds out there, such as Zach Condon from Beirut, and …..y’know, the others.
Combine clever lyrics, a bit of British slang, and Turner’s Yorkshire accent, you get something as infectious as ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’; simple guitar chords with words that nicely rhymes and rolls over your tongue. Alex Turner is going to have a tough time singing this live, especially when the band plays it faster as bands always do when they perform live – is it because of the nerves? You can see for yourself here, the clown make-up does not help.
I love the line: ‘You took a left of Last Laugh lane..’, talk about tongue twisters with good expressions - try saying it 50 times and see how long you can last.
